Hello and welcome to, The Calm Mind Method Blog!
In this blog I want to talk about three key elements of having a calm mind, reacting more calmly to challenging situations and living more in the present moment.
This will be a brief introduction to these concepts as you’ll see that throughout my other blogs on this site I dive deeper into each and every one of these elements.
What brought me here...
When I was twelve years old I started to suffer with a great amount of anxiety. I felt so incredibly alone and had no idea where to turn. Eventually I was diagnosed with OCD.
It was a tough road and a long journey. There were many sleepless nights and many uncertain moments. However, one of the very best steps I have ever made was reaching out for professional help and I would encourage anyone dealing with any kind of mental health issue to do the same.
After reaching out for professional help and through a long but dedicated journey, I am now able to say that anxiety and OCD are behind me. It wasn't easy and it certainly didn't take place over night, but with the right help and commitment that part of my life is a now a distant memory.
Am I now stress free? Of course not. We all experience stress and anxiety from time to time. We are human. We are sometimes meant to experience stress. In fact, some stress is healthy and certainly a part of life. It's a part of growth, development and how we come to learn lessons and become bigger and better.
After my battle with anxiety and OCD I noticed that I still suffered with everyday type of issues that many suffer with but are sometimes not even aware of. Things like racing thoughts, taking things personally, constant worry and dwelling on bad things in the past or constantly fearing the future. In a nutshell, I suffered with always being stuck inside of my head.
That's the kind of thing I help people with nowadays. Over the past ten years I've spoken in front of tens of thousands of people, wrote three books on the topic, and continue to publish free content on for my almost 100 000 subscribers on YouTube and this blog.
Before we get into the three "Aha" moments that changed my entire perception of how calming the mind is possible, I want to mention something. I want to talk about who these blog posts are NOT for and who they ARE for. I just want to make sure you are in the right place.
Who these blog posts are NOT for:
If you are suffering with severe anxiety or any kind of mental health issue and are coming here with the expectation that this blog is going to be a solution...these blog posts are not meant for that. In fact, if you suffer with extreme anxiety or any kind of mental health issue, I strongly recommend reaching out for professional help. I did and it was one of the most important decisions I've ever made.
Who these blog posts ARE for:
These blog posts are for those who suffer with more everyday type issues. Issues like being stuck inside of your head, constantly dwelling on the past or fearing the future. Issues like constantly taking things personally. Issues like feeling as though you are always attracting negative people or negative situations into your life.
My goal is to provide you with as many, "Aha" moments as I can with these blogs. You'll see they are eye-opening and will hopefully guide you on a path of calming your mind, reacting more calmly to challenging situations and living more in the present moment.
Now, let's dive into the three "Aha" moments of calming the mind:
Aha moment #1: Certain parts of our brain have a difficult time telling the difference between a thought and something real.
Have you ever wondered why you can feel off simply by thinking about something that you didn't like that took place in the past? If it's not happening when you're thinking about it, then how can it make you feel off?
It's because certain parts of the brain have a difficult time telling the difference between something real and a thought.
Let me give you an example: If you think about someone you love getting into a car accident, you're probably going to feel some kind of physiological negative sensation. Maybe you'll sweat a little, feel a lump in the pit of your stomach, etc.
Once again, it's because certain parts of your brain literally believe that what you're thinking about is actually taking place, even though you know that it's not. In fact, the person you're thinking about can be right in front of you, completely safe. But that doesn't matter to certain parts of your brain when you have a vivid thought about them getting hurt.
The average person thinks thousands of thoughts every single day. Many times, many of these thoughts are not only the same thoughts they thought the day before, but many of them are also negative thoughts, dwelling on bad things in the past or fearing what could happen in the future.
Now don't get me wrong, sometimes it's important to think about bad things in the past or fear what could happen in the future. But when it's of no value and becomes over consuming, then it's time to do something about it.
Reprogramming our thoughts is key and that's exactly what my blog posts are all about. Read my other blogs as I go into the process of taming our negative thoughts. I won't get into a deep dive in this particular blog post as this is just meant to be an intro.
Aha moment #2: It's not so much the negative situation but more-so our reaction to it that dictates how we feel.
Have you ever wondered why one person can seem to breeze through a particular situation and another person be devastated by it or how one person can love a particular person and you despise the same person?
It's because in most cases it's not the particular situation that causes you to feel a certain way, it's more so your reaction to it.
Take for example riding on a rollercoaster. For you, it may be terrifying, however, for your friend, they may love it. If situations caused certain reactions we would all react the same way to that particular situation.
Changing how we internalize certain situations can make all the difference in the world. Want to know how to change the way we react to challenging situations? Aha moment #3: Why we continue to attract negative people into our lives.
Have you ever felt as though you continue to attract negative people into your life? Ever wondered why this is? Let me break down one very important contributing factor.
It all boils down to the thoughts we regularly think. In other words, the thoughts we hold on a regular basis dictate what we are attracted to and what we tend to notice in life.
Take for example what happens when you buy a new car. When you buy a new car, you start to notice that car everywhere. Why? It's because that car is fresh in your mind. When something is fresh in your mind your brain trains your eyes to become aware of things of similarity.
Why is this important? It's important because if you're constantly thinking negative thoughts, your brain is going to train your eyes to pay attention to more negativity. The truth is that there is tons of negativity around us but also tons of positivity. What you pay attention to is determined by what kind of thoughts you think about most.
And guess what! You can only act upon opportunities that you are aware of. So if you're only noticing negative opportunities, well, that's the only opportunities that you will be able to act upon.
Changing our thought patterns can help us become attracted to the positivity that literally surrounds us and you'll learn all about how to do just that in my other blog posts.
In summary, we are able to calm our minds, react more calmly to challenging situations and live more in the peace and bliss of the present moment when we have the correct formula.
